Why it matters

The Virgin sits on a cushion on the ground, while the Child rests his forehead against her cheek. Three angels hold a gold brocade cloth behind them and two more play an organ and a lute.

  • It was painted in 1433–1435.
  • The roses and lily in her vase symbolise motherhood and purity.
  • It belongs to the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum and is on loan to the MNAC in Barcelona.
