Why it matters
Described as one of the most written-about and controversial paintings in the world, Primavera brings together figures from classical mythology in an orange grove, but no known story links them. It is usually read as an allegory of spring's lush growth, possibly shaped by the Neoplatonism popular in Medici Florence.
