Why it matters
A young knight stands in a landscape crowded with symbols, such as a heron caught by a hawk that may hint at death in battle. Dated 1510, it is the earliest full-length portrait in Western painting.
Did you know?
- It long bore a false monogram of Albrecht Dürer.
- Carpaccio's signature had been painted over.
- It may be a memorial portrait of someone already dead.
