Why it matters

The Virgin and Child stand in a barren tree whose black, withered branches form a crown of thorns. Fifteen golden letters 'A' hang from the branches, perhaps for 'Ave Maria'.

Did you know?

  • It dates from around 1462–1465.
  • It was only attributed to Petrus Christus in 1919.
  • Christus and his wife belonged to the Bruges Confraternity of Our Lady of the Dry Tree.
