Why it matters

A madman is healed by a relic of the True Cross, but Carpaccio's real subject seems to be Venice itself: the old wooden Rialto Bridge, gondolas used as ferries and foreigners in eastern dress fill the scene.

Did you know?

  • It dates from around 1496.
  • It was one of nine canvases on the relic's miracles for the Scuola Grande di San Giovanni Evangelista.
  • It was restored from 2019 with support from Save Venice.
