Why it matters

The angel Gabriel visits Mary in an open loggia, a setting Fra Angelico is credited with inventing. The best known of some fifty frescoes he made for the Convent of San Marco, it marks the transition from Gothic to Renaissance in its handling of space and light.

Did you know?

  • It was painted around 1440–1445.
  • Cosimo de' Medici commissioned the decoration when he rebuilt the convent.
  • Gothic Annunciations usually showed Mary indoors, enthroned.
