Why it matters

The enthroned Virgin and Child are surrounded by angels and saints, including the Medici patron saints Cosmas and Damian. Commissioned by Cosimo de' Medici, it is known as one of the best early Renaissance paintings for its perspective and trompe-l'œil.

  • It was completed between 1438 and 1443.
  • Nine predella panels told the legend of Cosmas and Damian.
  • Two side panels were bought back for the museum in 2007.
