Angels lead the blessed in a joyful dance on one side while the damned are tormented in hell on the other, a vivid vision of heaven and its opposite.

Why it matters

Christ sits in judgement: on his right, angels lead the saved through a garden to a shining city; on his left, demons drive the damned into hell, where Satan chews on sinners. Between them lie the open tombs of the dead.

  • It was made for the Camaldolese abbot Ambrogio Traversari.
