Why it matters

Correggio set this Nativity at night, lit as if by candlelight, with the Child at the centre in Mary's arms and shepherds on the left. Correggio's chiaroscuro became a model for later painters such as Guido Reni and Domenichino.

Did you know?

  • It was commissioned in 1522 and placed in its chapel in 1530.
  • Duke Francesco I d'Este took it for his private gallery in 1640.
  • It has been in Dresden since 1746.
