Why it matters
When opened, this tiny triptych shows the Virgin and Child in a church, with Saint Michael presenting a donor and Saint Catherine reading. Closed, it shows an Annunciation in grisaille that looks like sculpture. It has been called 'the most charming, delicate and appealing work by Jan van Eyck that has survived'.
Did you know?
- It is signed and dated 1437.
- It is the only surviving triptych attributed to van Eyck.
- It bears his motto ALC IXH XAN, 'I do as I can'.
- The panels are still in their original frames.
