Why it matters

The Virgin, dressed as a gypsy, rests with the Christ Child on the flight into Egypt, without Saint Joseph. Cardinal Federico Borromeo criticised Correggio for giving the Virgin the appearance of an Egyptian thief.

Did you know?

  • It dates from around 1516–1517.
  • Its title means 'The Little Gypsy Girl'.
  • It was badly damaged, including by a 1935 restoration.
