Why it matters
A Pharisee shows Christ a coin, and Christ answers: 'Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and unto God the things that are God's.' Possibly the earliest depiction of this scene, it was made for the door of Duke Alfonso I d'Este's coin cabinet.
Did you know?
- It was painted in 1516.
- Titian signed it on the Pharisee's collar.
- The duke's lands lay partly in the Holy Roman Empire and partly in the Papal States, giving the theme a political edge.
