Mercury

1580 · Bronze

The messenger god Mercury balances on one foot on a gust of wind, in a pose that seems to defy gravity: Giambologna's best-known bronze.

Why it matters

The god Mercury balances on the toes of his left foot on a breath of wind from the west wind Zephyrus, seeming weightless. Giambologna made several versions, and copies spread the Mannerist style across Europe.
