A reclining nymph surrounded by deer and hunting dogs was cast for the gateway of the Château de Fontainebleau, Cellini's major work for King Francis I.

Why it matters

A long-limbed nymph reclines with a stag, boars and dogs. Made for King Francis I, it was Cellini's first large bronze casting.

  • It dates from around 1543.
  • It was intended for the Porte Dorée at Fontainebleau, but never installed there.
  • It was placed above the gate of the Château d'Anet, home of Diane de Poitiers.
