Why it matters

The Madonna holds the Child before a Roman architectural background, but much of her mantle was never painted. It may be the Madonna Vasari bought for himself.

  • Her pose draws on Michelangelo's Erythraean Sibyl.
  • Parmigianino may have abandoned it during the Sack of Rome.
