Why it matters

The Madonna holds the Christ Child in her arms, his fingers on a globe. Painted for Pietro Aretino, it was instead given to Pope Clement VII, but in the end remained in Bologna.

  • A contemporary said not even 'a large cup of scudi would pay for it'.
  • Preparatory drawings show a kicking Christ Child.
