Why it matters

In a vast Venetian banquet framed by Palladian architecture, Mary Magdalene anoints Christ's feet at the far left. It is one of Veronese's monumental 'Feasts' for monastery refectories.

Did you know?

  • It was completed in 1570 for the monastery of San Sebastiano in Venice.
  • Veronese was later buried in that church.
  • It came to the Brera in 1817 after Napoleon's fall.
