Why it matters

A large hay wagon surrounded by fools engaged in all kinds of sin is dragged by infernal beings towards hell on the right panel, while Christ looks down unseen from the sky. On the outer wings Bosch painted a wayfarer in full colour.

Did you know?

  • Tree-ring research dates it to around 1516.
  • Philip II of Spain acquired it in 1570.
  • It was split up and only reassembled at the Prado in 1914.
