Why it matters

The Archangel Michael leads God's angels against a tangle of half-human, half-animal rebel angels and the seven-headed dragon. It is often considered Frans Floris's most famous painting.

  • It was the central panel of an altarpiece for the Antwerp fencers' guild.
  • Its side panels were lost in the iconoclastic fury of 1566.
