Why it matters
Pilate presents the beaten Christ to a jeering crowd, and inscriptions float from their mouths like speech balloons: 'Ecce Homo' ('Behold the Man') and the reply 'Crucify him'. An owl above Pilate and a toad on a soldier's shield are emblems of evil.
