Why it matters
Bosch's round panel shows a wayfarer on the road, who has been interpreted as choosing between virtue and debauchery, or as the prodigal son returning home.
Did you know?
- It was painted around 1500.
- It is a fragment of a partly lost triptych or diptych that also included The Ship of Fools and Death and the Miser.
- A similar figure appears on the outside of Bosch's Haywain Triptych.
- Tim Storrier's The Histrionic Wayfarer (after Bosch) won the 2012 Archibald Prize.
