Why it matters
An aged Saint Jerome kneels in a rocky landscape, holding the stone with which he beats his chest in penance, with his lion at his feet. The unfinished composition is drafted in monochrome on the panel.
Did you know?
- At some point after Leonardo's death the panel was cut into five pieces.
- It was restored to its original form, minus a very small triangle.
- A crucifix is faintly sketched at the extreme right.
