Why it matters
Judith stands powerfully with a raised axe, holding the head of the Assyrian general Holofernes by his hair. It is one of the first Renaissance sculptures conceived in the round, with four distinct faces.

- It was made in 1457–1464, late in Donatello's life.
- Cosimo de' Medici commissioned it for a fountain in the Medici palace garden.
- A copy stands on the Piazza della Signoria.
