Why it matters
The young David, clothed and in the International Gothic style, stands with the head of the giant he has killed. It was one of Donatello's earliest works and his most important commission up to that time.
Did you know?
- It was carved in 1408–1409 for Florence Cathedral.
- In 1416 it was moved to the Palazzo della Signoria as a political symbol.
- His later bronze David, nearly nude, became much more famous.
