Why it matters

Leonardo's earliest surviving major work, painted while he was still an apprentice in Verrocchio's workshop, shows the angel Gabriel announcing to Mary that she will bear the Son of God. Despite some criticism of its composition, it is one of the best-known Annunciations in Christian art.

Did you know?

  • It was painted around 1472–1476 in oil and tempera on poplar.
  • The marble table probably derives from a Medici tomb Verrocchio was sculpting at the time.
  • It has been in the Uffizi since 1867.
