Why it matters

Its full title is Painterly Realism of a Peasant Woman in Two Dimensions, but all it shows is a red quadrilateral on a white field. It was one of Malevich's first Suprematist works, shown at the 0,10 exhibition in Petrograd in 1915.

Did you know?

  • Malevich first explored the square in stage designs for the opera Victory Over the Sun in 1913.
  • It has no clear orientation and may have hung in different positions.
  • It is one of his three Suprematist squares, with black and white.
