Kazimir Malevich / An Englishman in Moscow

An Englishman in Moscow

1914 · Oil on canvas

A top-hatted Englishman stands amid a jumble of unrelated objects (a ladder, a fish, a church, a sabre): Malevich's nonsensical Cubo-Futurist riddle.

LocationAmsterdam, Netherlands
Dimensions90.5 × 59 cm

Why it matters

A man in a top hat, his face partly hidden by a white fish, is surrounded by a collage of a candle, a sabre, a ladder, a spoon and fragments of the words 'partial eclipse'. The Englishman is a metaphor for the clash of East and West.
