Why it matters

Red Army horsemen race across a plain striped with Suprematist bands of colour. It is considered Malevich's only contribution to the official canon of Soviet art, helped by its politically correct title.

Did you know?

  • It was painted around 1932.
  • Malevich wrote '1918' in the corner.
  • A verse on the back says the cavalry rides 'to defend the Soviet frontier'.
