Why it matters
A full moon lights up the Dnieper at night, its reflection glowing on the river. When Kuindzhi showed it in 1880 as the only work in an exhibition, lit artificially in a darkened room, crowds queued to see it and some visitors thought it was lit from behind by a lamp.
Did you know?
- Kuindzhi opened his studio to the public for two hours every Sunday while painting it.
- Grand Duke Konstantin Konstantinovich bought it before it was even exhibited.
- Turgenev and Mendeleev visited the studio to see it.
