Why it matters

Mondrian's last painting was still unfinished when he died in New York in 1944; he was working on it three days before his death. It has been called a testimony of the influence New York had on him.

Did you know?

  • It was bought in 1997 for 80 million guilders, then the most expensive purchase ever for a Dutch museum.
  • The purchase was funded by the Dutch central bank to mark the introduction of the euro.
  • Barack Obama was photographed with it in 2014.
