Why it matters

An apple tree spreads its branches across the canvas in non-naturalistic reds and blues. The first painting in Mondrian's Trees series, it marks an important stage in his transition towards Neoplasticism.

  • Mondrian was inspired by a Van Gogh retrospective he saw in 1905.
