Piet Mondrian / Evolution

Evolution

1911 · Oil on canvas

Three identical, naked figures pass, step by step, through a spiritual transformation.

Why it matters

Symbolic in form and with stylised lines, the painting marks a midpoint in Mondrian's path from landscape to radical abstraction, and was the last painting in which he depicted a human figure.

Did you know?

  • It was painted in 1911, after a visit to Paris.
  • It is in extremely fragile condition due to zinc soap formation.
  • The Kunstmuseum Den Haag acquired it in 1971.
