Why it matters

The Watzmann mountain, seen from Berchtesgaden. In 1937 its Jewish owner Martin Brunn was forced to sell it to the Alte Nationalgalerie to fund his family's escape to the USA.

Did you know?

  • It was painted in 1824–1825.
  • Hitler contributed 10,000 reichsmarks towards its purchase.
  • Senator Pogge of Greifswald acquired it in 1832.
