Why it matters

A stone dolmen lies on a snowy hilltop between three wind-bent oaks, two with broken tops, giving the scene a haunted, melancholy mood. It is probably one of Friedrich's first oil paintings.

  • It was probably painted around 1807.
  • The dolmen is based on a Neolithic grave near Gützkow, destroyed before 1818.
  • It has been in Dresden since 1905.
