Why it matters

Nude men and women cavort, play music and dance in a landscape of vivid colour. Along with Picasso's Les Demoiselles d'Avignon it is regarded as a pillar of early modernism.

Did you know?

  • It was first shown at the Salon des Indépendants in 1906.
  • Its colours and distortions provoked public outrage.
  • The circle of dancers resembles his later The Dance.
