Five dancers link hands in a circling chain, flattened into bold silhouettes: an early version of the Barnes Foundation mural that Matisse abandoned after a measuring error.

Why it matters

Grey dancing nudes stretch across three panels against blue, black and pink. Commissioned by Albert Barnes, this version did not fit its intended space, so Matisse painted another for Philadelphia.
