Why it matters

In this wall-size painting, figures make music, expressing man's attainment of completeness through creativity. Commissioned by Sergei Shchukin, it hung alongside Dance on the staircase of his Moscow mansion.

Did you know?

  • It was painted in 1910 without preparatory sketches.
  • It was poorly received at the 1910 Salon d'Automne.
  • In the Soviet era red paint was added to censor one of the figures; it has since been removed.
