Why it matters

Matisse's portrait of his wife Amélie, in bold, unnatural colours, was at the centre of the controversy at the 1905 Salon d'Automne, where a critic called the painters 'fauves': wild beasts.

Did you know?

  • It was painted in 1905.
  • Critic Louis Vauxcelles coined the phrase 'Donatello chez les fauves'.
  • Its loose brushwork shocked viewers.
