Why it matters
The head of a dog gazes upwards from behind a dark mass, almost lost in an empty expanse. It is one of Goya's Black Paintings, painted directly on the walls of his house.
Did you know?
- Goya painted it between 1819 and 1823, in his mid-70s.
- The Prado suggests the dog is in distress, apparently drowning.
- The paintings stayed in the house for 50 years after Goya left.
