Why it matters
A small early work in which Saint George fights the dragon. It formed a pair with the equally small Saint Michael, also in the Louvre; in the Mazarin Collection the two were joined into a diptych and bound in leather.
Did you know?
- It dates from about 1503–1505.
- Louis XIV acquired it from Cardinal Mazarin's heirs in 1661.
- The horse resembles one of the horses of Monte Cavallo (the Quirinal Palace).
- A later version of the subject is in Washington.
