Why it matters
The attribution of this painting to Raphael is uncertain, and the involvement of Giulio Romano cannot be excluded. The rose and the lower portion were added at a later date by an unknown artist.
Did you know?
- It dates from 1518–1520.
- A second version without the added rose is in private hands.
- A paper using artificial intelligence concluded it was by Raphael, but that Saint Joseph was added by someone else.
