Why it matters

A man in a red turban looks directly out at us. The unusually prominent motto 'Als Ich Can' on the original frame and the confrontational gaze suggest it may be Jan van Eyck's self-portrait.

Did you know?

  • It was completed in 1433 in Bruges.
  • It may be the pendant to his portrait of his wife.
  • It has been in the National Gallery since 1851.
