Why it matters
This unfinished marble figure may be Apollo taking an arrow from his quiver, as Vasari said, or David, as a 1553 inventory called it: hence its double name, Apollo-David.

- It was commissioned by Baccio Valori, the governor imposed on Florence after the siege.
- Work stopped when Michelangelo left Florence; it later belonged to Duke Cosimo I.
