Why it matters
This marble Pietà shows three figures, one of them the body of Christ. It was long attributed to Michelangelo, but it is now mostly thought to be by someone else: the Galleria dell'Accademia calls the attribution 'still somehow controversial'.
Did you know?
- It dates from around 1555.
- It stood in a room beside the church of Santa Rosalia in Palestrina and belonged to the Barberini family.
