Why it matters

Giorgione's Judith refers to the story of Judith and Holofernes. For a long time attributed to Raphael, it is one of the few authentic works by Giorgione in the Hermitage.

Did you know?

  • It was painted around 1504.
  • It came to the Hermitage from Paris in 1772.
  • A restoration completed in 1971 removed dark yellow varnish and revealed a tower and landscape in the background.
