Why it matters

An old woman behind a parapet opens her mouth as if to speak, perhaps the words on the scroll in her hand: 'With Time'. It is an allegory of old age and passing time.

  • It dates from around 1506 and is still in its original frame.
  • A 1569 inventory calls it 'Giorgione's mother, by Giorgione'.
