Why it matters

Giovanna degli Albizzi, shown in profile in precious clothes, died while pregnant with her second child in 1488. Her husband Lorenzo Tornabuoni commissioned the portrait after her death, filling it with symbols of her status and piety.

  • It was actually painted around 1489–1490.
