Why it matters

The Virgin lies on her deathbed in a space of classical architecture, while through the window a lake view shows the bridge at the Castello di San Giorgio in Mantua. The panel once decorated the castle's chapel.

Did you know?

  • It dates from about 1462–1464.
  • A fragment showing Christ with the Virgin's soul is in Ferrara.
  • The unfinished pilasters suggest it was once larger.
