Why it matters

Christ shows his wounds, supported by two kneeling angels on an ancient sarcophagus. Behind them, workers cut stone in a quarry and two holy women run along a path to reach the tomb.

  • It dates from around 1488–1500.
  • Mantegna signed it on the marble base.
  • It came into the Danish royal collection in 1763.
