Why it matters

A small early work by Mantegna, probably commissioned by Borso d'Este during the artist's stay in Ferrara. It was transferred from panel to canvas, losing a small section on the far right.

Did you know?

  • It dates from about 1450–1451.
  • By 1603 it belonged to Cardinal Pietro Aldobrandini.
  • In 1792 it was sold to the dealer Alexander Day.
